Sociology- Alienated Labor Marx?
What differentiates man from animal? Or, put differently, what does Marx mean by the concept of man as “species-being?”
Marx’s concept of our ‘humanity’ and the ways in which it was being destroyed is at the heart of his analysis of capitalism.
His view was that ‘humanity’ . comprises our ability to be:
-creative..
-communal
-in accord with nature, and above all
-self aware
….not as a separate list of abilites but as a marvellous and privileged set of intertwining abilties which has tremendous promise for our future history.
He wrote a critique in 1844 in his ‘Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts’, of the way that Capitalism in its rawest and most unregulated form ( ie in the mid 19th century) , was the major destructive force of each of these aspects of what it meant to be human
He used his own analysis, the work of other social scientists and goverment reports of the time to argue that it was not simply a problem of greedy manufacturers and financiers but that it was the underlying political- economic system (ie capitalism) that was inflcitng ‘Alienation’ or dehumanisation on the majority of people – the workers who only had their labour to sell.
Moreover in his historical analysis of the development from Feudalism(which he also saw as exploitative) to Capitalism he demonstrated the several ways in which these workers, includng children, had been constructed as dehumanised (ie alienated) factory fodder.
